Elections on 2 May

Elections for the next Mayor of London and London Assembly members, as well as the by-election for Hillrise ward, will take place on Thursday 2 May. You must now show photo ID when you vote at polling stations. See a full list of accepted forms of ID.

Travel

Information about travel options locally, around the UK and outside of the country.

Travel for children

All children under 5 travel free with a fare-paying adult on Transport for London (TfL) services and National Rail train services. That includes London busses, trams, the tube, DLR, overground and nationwide rail services.

Children of compulsory school age (5 to 16) get free travel on TfL bus routes with a Zip Oyster photocard.

Children aged 16 to 17 can apply online for a 16+ Zip Oyster photocard, which will give them 50 per cent off adult fares.

Railcards

Railcards can save you money on train tickets if you are planning on taking more than one train journey. There area number of railcards to choose from, depending on things like your age, who you are travelling with and any disabilities you may have.

Railcards can be purchased online or in person at a staffed railway station. They are available to non-UK nationals and you will need a form of ID to purchase one. For a full list of available railcards, or to search for one most suitable for you or your family, visit the railcard website.

Planning journeys in London

London has a big and convenient public transport system. There are many resources that can help you to plan your journey around the city.

  • Transport for London's (TfL) website has an easy-to-use website which can help you to plan your journey. You can also download bus and tube maps.
  • Google Maps and City Mapper can help you plan public transport, taxi and driving routes, including the cost of your trip.

Travelling outside the UK

You can travel outside the UK after arriving but we recommend you get a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) first.

Apply for a BRP

The UK government guidance states: "The permission to travel letter is not restricted to single entry. However, if a guest chooses to leave the UK before providing their biometrics and receiving a BRP, they will be required to present their permission to travel letter again and receive a new Leave to Remain Outside the Rules (LOTR) stamp on arrival. It is recommended that guests obtain a BRP before leaving the UK".

Driving in the UK

If you passed your driving test in Ukraine and have a valid driving licence, you can drive all the vehicles shown on your driving licence for up to 3 years from when you became resident in the UK (or until the licence expires if less than 3 years).

If you want to drive for over 3 years, you will need to exchange your driving licence for a UK driving licence.
