Protection and safety

What you can do to report a crime or if you are experiencing threats and violence in and out of the home.

In any emergency, you should call the emergency services using the number 999. You will then be able to talk to police, ambulance, fire or search and rescue.

If the situation is not an emergency, you can call 111 for medical advice and guidance or 101 to contact the police in situations that do not need an immediate response. You can also access the 111 service online at 111.nhs.uk.

Domestic abuse

If you or someone you know is the victim of domestic abuse and is in immediate danger, you should call the police by dialling 999. If you ring on a mobile and are unable to speak when you call, you can enter 55 on your phone’s keypad to be transferred to the police.

You can also speak to Refuge’s National Domestic Abuse helpline by calling 0808 2000 247. For more information, visit the National Domestic Abuse website [Home | Refuge National Domestic Abuse Helpline (nationaldahelpline.org.uk)].

Hate crimes

If you are being harassed, threatened or attacked because of your race or any other forms of discrimination (based on the nine protected characteristics), this is illegal and should not be tolerated.

We encourage anyone who is the victim of a hate crime, or receives a serious threat against them, to report it to the police either by calling 999 in an emergency or 112 in a non-emergency situation.

You can also report hate crimes online. People should be able to live their lives free of harassment and fear and Islington Council will support you if you find yourself in a situation where this is not the case. Visit our page on reporting hate crimes for more information.

Reporting a crime

If you have witnessed or been the victim of crime, please report it to the police either by calling 999 to report emergencies or by calling 101 for non-emergencies.
