Elections on 2 May

Elections for the next Mayor of London and London Assembly members, as well as the by-election for Hillrise ward, will take place on Thursday 2 May. You must now show photo ID when you vote at polling stations. See a full list of accepted forms of ID.

Polling stations are open from 7am to 10pm.

Mayoral and London Assembly elections

There will be Mayor of London and London Assembly elections on 2 May 2024. Find out everything you need to know about voting on election day.

Who can vote

To vote in the Mayor of London and London Assembly elections, you must be: 

  • registered to vote  
  • 18 or over on the day of the election (polling day) 
  • a British, Irish, qualifying Commonwealth or EU citizen 
  • resident at an address in Greater London.

You must not be legally excluded from voting.

How to vote 

You can:

If you are voting in person, you must bring photo ID to vote.

If you do not have the right type of voter ID, you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate (VAC) before 5pm on 24 April 2024. This will give us enough time to send you a VAC so that you can vote in person on Thursday 2 May 2024.

Access to polling stations for people with disabilities

  • All polling stations are wheelchair accessible.
  • Polling staff are trained to help disabled and other voters to vote.
  • Equipment (such as ramps, visual enhancement aids, low level polling booths and Braille information) is available at all stations.

A companion or the presiding officer at the polling station can help any voter who is unable to vote without assistance or who is unable to read.

Voting system and the North East GLA constituency

The Mayor of London is elected using the First Past the Post system. This means:

  • you vote once for a candidate
  • the candidate with the most votes becomes mayor. 

London Assembly members are elected using the Additional Member system. This means:

  • you vote twice
  • one vote for your constituency member and one vote for a London-wide representative.

Islington is in the North East GLA constituency which also includes the London Borough of Hackney and London Borough of Waltham Forest. 

There are 14 constituency members and 11 London-wide members.

Key dates to remember 

  • Tuesday 19 March - Publication of Notice of Election
  • Tuesday 2 April, 4pm - Publication of Statement of persons (and parties) nominated
  • Tuesday 16 April
    • Deadline to register to vote (midnight)
  • Wednesday 17 April (5pm) - Receipt of postal vote applications
  • Wednesday 24 April (5pm)
    • Deadline to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate
    • Receipt of proxy vote applications
  • Friday 26 April - First day to issue replacement postal votes
  • Thursday 2 May - Day of election (polling day - 7am to 10pm)
