Housing conditions: what to expect

Islington Council expects all privately rented accommodation in the borough to be safe, free from hazards and in good repair. It is the landlord’s responsibility to ensure their properties meet an acceptable standard.

  • Free of damp and mould 
  • Easy to keep warm in the winter and cool in the summer
  • Fresh running hot and cold water
  • Safe electrical and gas appliances and installation
  • Working smoke alarms and a CO alarm in rooms that are burning solid fuel
  • Free of pests such as mice, rats, cockroaches and bed bugs
  • Safe and secure from the risk of intruders
  • Good levels of natural light and ventilation
  • Adequate space and free from overcrowding
  • Working toilets, kitchens, bathrooms and drainage

If your landlord doesn't or will not provide any of the above the council can help to make them carry required works.
