If you get or give care you may be be able to get a lower council tax bill.

If you get care or give care (consider yourself a carer), you may be able to apply for a discount to your council tax bill.

You may qualify for the council tax carers discount if all the following apply:

  • you live permanently with the person you care for.
  • the person you care for is not your spouse or your child under the age of 18 (you can qualify if your child is over 18).
  • you provide unpaid care for at least 35 hours per week.

The person you care for must be receiving one of the following qualifying benefits:

  • the higher or lower rate Attendance Allowance
  • the highest or middle rate of the care component of disability living allowance
  • Constant Attendance Allowance- increased amount
  • the daily living component of personal independence payment – standard rate or enhanced rate
  • the armed forces independence payment at any amount

Please also let us know if you:

  • are in hospital
  • have a partner who normally lives with you in hospital
  • have had to leave your home empty to go and live with the person you provide care for
