Crane licence

A crane licence permits a mobile crane or aerial platform to operate on the public highway.

Cranes are not permitted on the highway until a licence has been agreed and issued. The aim of licensing is to balance the needs of businesses and residents with the public expectation of an unobstructed footway.

How to apply

You must apply at least ten working days in advance, to allow enough time for us to process the licence and ensure the co-ordination of works. Please make sure you enclose the correct documentation as incorrect documentation could delay the process. To apply, please complete the crane online application form. As part of the application, you must provide:

  • A pedestrian management plan where pedestrians will be affected during the erection of the crane, while in operation and when the crane is being removed, if applicable.

If the street needs to be closed for the purpose of the works you must apply for a road closure. Applications will take approximately six weeks. This lead in time will increase for strategic routes up to 8-12 weeks. For all road closure applications please email
