Easter service changes

During the Easter period, some of our services will be operating slightly different hours. Our council’s bin collection schedule will change for one week starting on Friday 29 March to make sure everyone’s waste is picked up around the bank holiday.

See the full schedule and your amended rubbish and recycling collection dates and other service changes including parking and library opening times over the Easter period.

Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan 2023-25

How our Waste Reduction and Recycling plan 2023-25 will help Islington reach net zero carbon emissions by 2030.

In June 2019, Islington Council declared an environment and climate emergency and promised to work towards making Islington net zero carbon by 2030. Reducing, reusing and recycling waste is a key part in tackling this emergency.

Our Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan 2023-25 sets out how Islington will meet waste and recycling goals as part of its work to tackle the climate emergency.

Our four recycling and waste objectives

  • Objective 1: Reduce waste focusing on food waste and single-use packaging
  • Objective 2: Maximise recycling rates
  • Objective 3: Reduce the environmental impact of waste activities (greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants)
  • Objective 4: Maximise local waste sites and ensure London has sufficient infrastructure to manage all the waste it produces.

Reaching our recycling target

To help create a cleaner, greener, healthier borough, we have set a target of recycling 40 per cent of the household waste it collects by 2030.

Making sure that recycling is easy and accessible for residents on estates is at the heart of this, and we plan to invest £2 million over the course of three years to ensure that facilities on estates are clean, well-maintained, and easy to use.

We will also:

  • expand food waste recycling collections to all suitable purpose-built blocks of flats and are trialling food waste collections for residents living in flats above shops.
  • work with businesses and partners to make sure that by 2030 the council recycles 75 per cent of the commercial waste it collects.
  • create a zero emissions recycling and refuse fleet by 2030, by continuing to reduce the overall size of the fleet and by investing in more zero emissions vehicles.
