Pedestrian drop-off at Reuse and Recycling Centre closed

Due to planned improvement works, the pedestrian drop-off point at the Hornsey Street Reuse and Recycling Centre will be closed between 1-15 October.

Bulky waste terms and conditions

Your booking is subject to the following terms and conditions, please read these carefully.

1 Service description

The service is available to Islington residents for the collection of bulky household items (e.g. furniture, domestic fridge / freezer) which are not collected as part of the weekly domestic waste collection service. The council will not collect certain items as part of the bulky waste service, including, but not restricted to:

  • garden waste
  • hazardous waste
  • builder's waste.

The council reserves the right to add to the above list.

The service is not for businesses or residential landlords who may use the commercial waste service for removal of their bulky items (email commercial.waste@islington.gov.uk).

A maximum of 10 items can be collected per collection.

An item broken into two or more parts will only count as one item if securely bound together.

Further item restrictions may apply.

Only the specified items that have been paid for will be collected. Unpaid for or extra items will not be collected.

2 Charges

  • the charge for the first three items is £32 
  • the charge for each subsequent item is £10.66 

3 Payment

Payment can be made online or over the phone. 

We do not accept the following cards: Diners Club, American Express.

Payment must be made before the date of the collection. 

4 Concessions

Residents in receipt of housing benefit or Council Tax reduction are entitled to a 50% discount on the normal charge. When applying for a discount, the relevant benefits or other reference number must be provided as evidence of receipt of benefit.

5 Assisted collections

If you are unable to carry the items outside, and are either over 65 or registered disabled, you can ask for an assisted collection.

To ask for an assisted collection you must call us on 020 7527 2000

6 Collection days

Bulky household waste is normally collected between 7am and 3pm. The collection day will as specified by the resident during the booking process.

The council reserves the right to change the collection date but will give as much notice as possible to customers if we do this.

You can report a missed collection by emailing contact@islington.gov.uk or phoning 020 7527 2000.

Where a missed collection has been reported and the items have been made available for collection correctly, the council will try to collect the missed items as soon we can.  

The council will not return to collect missed items that have not been made available for collection correctly.

7 Cancellation by customer

All collections can be cancelled and refunded subject to at least two full working days notice (excluding weekends) being provided prior to the scheduled collection day. Collections can be cancelled by calling 0207 527 2000.

8 Refunds

We will give you a complete refund if the collection is cancelled two full working days before the scheduled collection day. No refund will be given for late cancellation.

We will give you a complete refund if we miss a collection and don’t come back to collect within a reasonable time, as long as the uncollected items have been presented for collection correctly. 

No refund will be given for missed items not presented for collection correctly. No refund will be given if you put out fewer items than you paid for or for items that are booked for collection and been removed by a third party.

Any claim for a refund needs to be claimed and received by our Customer Centre within three months of the date the collection was booked.

9 Collection point

Items for collection must be placed at the collection point by 7am on the collection day.

Items for collection must be placed at street level, clearly visible and accessible from the pavement.

10 Presentation for collection

Only items specified in the collection request should be put out for collection and they must be clearly identified.

The council does not accept any responsibility for items collected in error.

Fridges and freezers must be empty with their motors and pipes intact.

11 Cancellation by the council

The council may cancel a collection requested by a customer if the customer contravenes these terms and conditions and may refuse future requests by the customer for collection of bulky household items.

12 Changes

The council reserves the right to make changes to these terms and conditions Any such changes will be posted on line and will apply to any requests for the service made after the date of posting.

13 General

  • The council shall not be liable for any delay or failure to perform any of its obligations if the delay or failure results from events or circumstances outside its reasonable control, including but not limited to acts of God, strikes, lock-outs, accidents, war, fire or breakdown of plant or vehicles.
  • Nothing in these Terms and Conditions shall affect your statutory rights as a consumer.
  • These Terms and Conditions shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the law of England and the parties hereby submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts.

By requesting and paying for the bulky waste collection service online you are deemed to have accepted these terms and conditions.

By applying for a discounted charge, you warrant and represent that you:

  • are in receipt of housing benefit or Council Tax support and;
  • have supplied a valid reference number and;
  • acknowledge that the provision of false information to obtain a discount is a criminal offence.
