St Jude's Street Garden

Information about improvement works to St Jude's Street Gardens.

We are planning to make our borough greener, and healthier. As part of this, we want to make some improvements to St Jude's Street Garden.

St Jude’s Street Garden is a small, popular Islington park on the border of Hackney. The park is well used by local people, as well as families and children from the nearby primary school.

Following consultation with the local community, we are planning to refurbish the whole park, including:

Updating and upgrading the playground facilities with timber play, swings, and slides with grass mounds
New tree planting
A new footpath across the site to improve accessibility
Removal of the grass mound to the east of the park, and selective vegetation, to reduce opportunities for anti-social behaviour
A community garden to provide an outdoor learning space for local schools, and food growing space for local residents
Biodiversity improvements including new hedge planting within the community garden, areas of wildflower meadow and seasonal bulb planting

What has happened so far?

The council conducted engagement sessions with the local community, including gathering views on the design of the community garden.
A local landscape architect worked on designs ideas based on feedback from the consultation and engagement sessions.
At the end of 2023, Network Rail needed to do essential maintenance work to Kingsbury bridge adjacent to the park. Network Rail needed to utilise St Jude’s Street Garden to access the bridge, which is a key access route to local facilities including schools and transport networks. The park was closed while this work was taking place, and was reopened at the end of March 2024.

What happens next?

Now that Network Rail have completed their works, we are able to proceed with the improvement works to the park.
We are now at the stage of tendering for a contractor for this work, which we anticipate will begin in Autumn 2024.
We will update this web page with more information in the summer months.
