There are several government grants and schemes available to help you improve your home’s energy efficiency and cut down on energy bills. Don’t assume you’re not eligible, each scheme has different criteria, and many are time limited. Energy Company Obligation (ECO)
Funded by energy suppliers to help low-income and vulnerable households with energy saving upgrades.
What’s available:
- Loft and wall insulation
- Heating upgrades
- Other energy-saving improvements
Who can apply:
- Owner-occupiers and private renters
- Households on low income or receiving certain benefits

Boiler Upgrade Scheme
Replace your fossil fuel heating system with a low-carbon alternative and get a grant through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Grants may cover the following:
- £7,500 for an air source heat pump
- £7,500 for a ground or water source heat pump
- £5,000 for a biomass boiler

Warm Homes: Local Grant
The Warm Homes: Local Grant, provides energy efficiency measures and low carbon heating to low-income households in England.

Warm Home Discount
Get £150 off your electricity bill or a voucher if you use a prepayment meter.
- Automatically applied if you receive means-tested benefits and have high energy bills (as of 13 August 2023)

Great British Insulation Scheme
You may be eligible for free or discounted insulation through the government’s Great British Insulation Scheme.
This can include:
- Cavity wall insulation
- Loft insulation
You might get support if your home:
- has an energy performance certificate (EPC) of D to G - check your EPC
- is in Council Tax bands A-D in England- check your Council Tax band
You can be a homeowner, landlord or tenant (either renting privately or from a housing association). If you’re a tenant, speak to your landlord before you apply. You’ll need their permission before any insulation can be installed.

Winter Fuel Payment
If you were born before 22 September 1959 you could get either £200 or £300 to help you pay your heating bills for winter 2025 to 2026. This is known as a ‘Winter Fuel Payment’.
You may be eligible if you or your partner get certain benefits.

Cold Weather Payment
You may get Cold Weather Payments if you’re getting certain benefits or Support for Mortgage Interest.
If you’re eligible, you’ll get these payments automatically. You do not need to apply, but you may need to tell Jobcentre Plus if you have a baby or if a child under 5 comes to live with you.
