What a hate crime is

Find out more about what a hate crime is, so you know when to report it.

A hate crime is a crime committed because of hostility or prejudice towards someone's:

  • religion or belief
  • race or ethnic identity
  • transgender identity
  • disability
  • sexual orientation

Some incidents are not crimes, but you can still report them.

If you think you were targeted because of one of these characteristics, you can report it.

The police record hate crimes. They may also record hate incidents if there is a risk of harm.

Even if something is not recorded as a crime, you can still get support and advice.
