St James Church open space on Prebend Street

Information about the project to improve the space next to St James’ Church.

We are pleased to announce that we are transforming the open space next to St James’ Church. Thanks to valuable feedback from the local community, we have created plans to make the space greener, more accessible, and better suited to the needs of residents.

A cleaner, greener space

We will plant two new trees, flowering shrubs, bulbs, and hedges. This will boost the biodiversity and help to improve the appearance of the area.

Somewhere to sit

The layout will be improved, making it a better place to sit and relax. There will also be new benches and seating installed to make the space more accessible to people with mobility impairments.

Project timeline and parking restrictions

The works needed to deliver this project will be undertaken in two stages. The hard-landscaping work will start on 9 October and is expected to last a few weeks between 08:00 and 16:00, Monday – Friday, and 08:30 – 13:00 on Saturdays. A second phase will be undertaken in November where the planting for the scheme will be installed, when the weather is cooler and the plants will establish themselves more easily.

During the first phase, to allow us to carry out the works safely, we will need to close off the construction work areas and divert pedestrians. Signage will be put up on site to indicate the construction works areas and the footpath diversions.

During this time, we will need to introduce temporary parking restrictions on Bishop Street to allow us to carry out the works as quickly and as efficiently as possible. The restrictions will be kept to a minimum and we will ensure that signs are put up well in advance to give as much notice as possible.

We will make every effort to keep any disruption and noise to a minimum and we will be carrying out the works during off-peak hours. The contractor’s actual work times may vary depending on the nature of the works and the weather conditions.
