Copying our materials

Information about copying and reproducing materials from our collections and charges that apply.

All copying and photography are at the discretion of Archives staff, and depends on the condition of the material and its copyright.

Any images you copy are for private research use only. If you want to publish or display the images publicly in any way (either print or digital), contact us for more information.

Photocopying

A self-service photocopier is available in our search room. All photocopying is done only with permission from our staff.

Items you can't copy

You can't copy some items because of copyright regulations and so we can protect our collections from damage. This includes:

  • fragile items
  • items over 100 years old
  • photographs over 50 years old.

Charges for photocopies in black and white

  • A4 photocopy (self-service): £0.15
  • A3 photocopy (self-service): £0.20

Charges for photocopies in colour

  • A4 photocopy (self-service): £0.50
  • A3 photocopy (self-service): £1.00

Microfilm copies

A4 sections of microfilmed material can be printed in our search room.

Photos of materials

You may photograph material in our search room. Conditions and fees apply.

Charge for a photography permit using own camera or device

  • One day pass: £5

Scanning

We can send high-resolution scans of items up to A3 size. 

Charges for scanning up to A3 size

  • Images supplied by email (up to 10MB): £15 per image plus VAT.
  • Images supplied by File Transfer Protocol (up to 2GB): £15 per image plus VAT. 

Charges for rights to use images (reproduction)

Prices are per image or item unless it says something else. These charges do not include VAT and that must be added on top. You must credit all images to Islington Archives.

These fees are a guide only – final fees will be agreed with you after you apply for reproductions. 

Budget

We strongly recommend that you discuss reproduction fees with us during the planning stage of your project, so we can consider all options and agree on an appropriate budget.

If you are applying for project funding, discuss your image reproduction budget with us before you submit your application. We can give a reduced rate for community projects if you ask us first.

Terms and conditions

Image reproduction fees help to fund the work of the Islington Archives team. They contribute to important activities like:

  • preservation of our collections
  • educational work with schools
  • events programming and exhibitions.

Copyright

If we do not own the copyright of material, it is your responsibility to get permission for reproduction before you copy anything. Any material copied from our collections should be credited to Islington Archives.

Permissions, donations and extra fees

  • Image reproduction fees are a payment for permission to use copies of items within the collections of Islington Archives. It is your responsibility to get permission from any third-party copyright holders.
  • High-resolution scans of items from the collection have a separate fee of £15 plus VAT.
  • Images may only be reproduced in the way described on the Image Reproduction Request form. A separate request must be submitted for any extra or different use.
  • We welcome donations of any publications that feature the collections of Islington Archives, for inclusion in our reference collection.
  • All image reproduction is at the discretion of Islington Archives. These fees are a guide only – final fees are to be agreed upon application.
