Home shelter

Find out how our home shelter scheme can help you live safely in your own home if you have experienced domestic violence.

The home shelter scheme is for council tenants and can help you live safely in your own home if you have experienced domestic violence. We do this by adding extra security measures to make your home more secure.

We offer an alternative to homelessness. You have a right to live free from fear and violence.

In an emergency, call the police on 999.

Security measures we can you add to your home

Once accepted a crime prevention officer will visit your home. They will assess the suitable security measures. We can tailor security measures to suit your needs.

Some of the measures we can add to your home include:

  • creating a safe room
  • fitting solid-core doors to the home shelter room and main doors to the property
  • adding stronger door and window locks and stronger hinge
  • fitting a 180-degree door viewer to your front door
  • fitting smoke detectors and fireproof letterboxes.

How to apply

You must be a council tenant. If you are a tenant of a housing association or a private landlord, you will need to contact your landlord as they are responsible for carrying out these works.

If you are already receiving help from an advocate, such as a family support worker, Solace support worker, social worker or housing officer, they can help you to apply.

You can also contact the Housing Aid team:
