Statutory Proposal to Amalgamate Copenhagen Primary School and Vittoria Primary School

Part 1

Notice is given, in accordance with Section 15 of the Education and Inspections Act 2006 (as amended by the Education Act 2011) and the School Organisation (Establishment and Discontinuance of Schools) Regulations 2013, that Islington Council intends to discontinue Copenhagen Primary School and move Vittoria Primary School to the Copenhagen Primary School site, with effect from 31 August 2023.

  • Name, address, and category of school proposed to be discontinued: Copenhagen Primary School, Treaty Street, London N1 0WF
  • Date on which it is proposed to close the school: 31 August 2023

Part 2

Notice is given, in accordance with Sections 18 and 19 of the Education and Inspections Act 2006 (as amended by the Education Act 2011) and the School Organisation (Prescribed Alterations to Maintained Schools) (England) Regulations 2013, that Islington Council intends to increase the capacity of Vittoria Primary School from 210 to 315 and with effect from 1 September 2023.

The proposals contained in Parts One and Two of this notice are related.

Reason for closure of Copenhagen Primary School

The proposal is due to a fall in pupil numbers and the associated impact on the future viability of the school. Copenhagen and Vittoria Primary Schools have been acutely impacted by reduced pupil demand in the area.

The school organisation proposal is to amalgamate (merge) Vittoria and Copenhagen primary schools into a single school, on the existing Copenhagen site – bringing together the identities and strengths of both schools under one roof.

The amalgamation would mean these schools merging to operate from a single site, enabling them to make the best use of the staff expertise, while securing the merged school’s financial future.

Under the proposal, the amalgamated school would become a 1.5 form entry school. A maximum of 45 pupils would be admitted to Reception classes in the merged school from September 2023. All existing children would be offered a place within the merged school.

This notice is an extract from the full proposal and the full proposal can be downloaded from ‘useful documents’ or you can request a copy by emailing copenhagenandvittoria@islington.gov.uk.
