A message from Carmel Littleton, Corporate Director for People

There is nothing more important for the council, or for the partnership, than protecting and safeguarding children and young people. We view youth safety through a safeguarding lens, indicative of our ‘child first, offender second’ approach. We know that many of our young people have become involved in offending because of adverse childhood experiences, trauma, discrimination and exploitation. That’s why it’s essential that we do what we can to steer these young people onto the right path, whilst simultaneously protecting the public and victims. We do this by working together, as a partnership, and alongside these children, their parents/carers, and the wider community.

Our Youth Safety Strategy 2020-2025 sets out how we aim to create a better society for all of our children and young people, including tackling disproportionality, through our Fairer Together initiative and through our partnership response to youth safety and safeguarding.

You will join a well-established senior management team and a mature partnership and lead on ensuring that our ambitious Youth Safety Strategy is implemented and delivers. You will lead a high performing division where the workforce is trained in Motivational and Trauma Informed Practice, delivering universal, targeted and specialist services, including our award winning Integrated Gangs Team. We are looking for someone who has achieved significant success at a senior level to drive forward one of our highest corporate priorities.

You will also lead our Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy and services as in Islington we believe that youth safety is intrinsically linked to experiences of domestic violence and abuse. We have recently received substantial additional funds and have expanded this service and our commissioning of victim and perpetrator services to address the high levels of domestic abuse within the borough.

We are looking to appoint a visible leader, who relishes driving strategy and change, whilst leading and managing exceptional operational services; you will be required to set the highest of expectations and hold a strong grip of the detail.
