The role

The Corporate Director of Community Wealth Building is a brand new role, heading up a new directorate, with the aim of creating a positive impact on residents and our wider community by tackling economic disadvantage and inequality.

Islington Council is ambitious for change. We have made a significant impact in a number of areas in our vision to create a fairer Islington. However, national and global developments – austerity, Brexit and most recently Covid-19 and the death of George Floyd – have put unprecedented pressure on our residents and shone a bright light on the deep inequalities and unfairness that blight our communities. Our immediate priority is to keep residents safe while we fight this virus, but as we start our recovery, our mission to make the borough fairer has never been more important. We are focused on creating a fairer future but we can only make our borough a fairer place by tackling the inequalities and unfairness that blight our communities.

As a member of the Department’s Senior Management Team, we are looking for someone who can develop and lead the implementation of the Community Wealth Building Strategy for tackling economic disadvantage and inequality, increasing opportunity for all through creating a sustainable and inclusive local economy, underpinned by a strong community asset base and a procurement strategy that maximises social value.

You will drive positive cultural change, embodying and promoting the values and behaviours of the council and ensure the effective implementation of corporate initiatives and transformation programmes that cut across the whole or part of the council’s activities.

In addition, you will:

  • shape and drive forward the council’s Inclusive Economy Strategy, building a local economy that works for all residents and local businesses

  • ensure the delivery of Inclusive Economy work to support and develop local economic clusters, both geographic and sectoral. You will also ensure the council’s economic wellbeing offer to residents including financial resilience and employment support are delivered

  • develop and ensure delivery of the council’s Corporate Asset Strategy and supporting associated governance

  • develop the council’s progressive procurement strategy ensuring social value as a key driver and an alignment with the overall council aim of fairness and tackling economic disadvantage and inequality

  • ensure the approach to strategic land use planning and development management is consistent with the aims of the Directorate and supports a sustainable inclusive local economy

  • ensure Islington’s assets and spaces support the delivery of our Community Wealth Building ambitions, including the viability and delivery of Major Capital Projects.
