Bikeability cycle training for children
We offer free Bikeability cycle training for children aged 5-12 years old in the school holidays at various locations across the borough.
We have bikes for children to borrow at our Prior Weston courses only. These are suitable for children with inside leg measurement 56-65cm (which is for those aged around 8+). You can contact us if you have any questions about using one of our bikes.
There are three courses available to suit your child’s age and ability:
Beginners – Learning to ride (for ages 5 and up).
This is a short course (2 x 1 hour sessions) for kids who are complete beginners who have never cycled before or have only ridden a bike with stabilisers (training wheels).
Bikeability Level 1 – Off-road control skills (for children aged 5-9 years).
This is a two-day course (2 x 2 hour sessions) for children who can already ride a bike without stabilisers. This course helps to develop all the skills that your kids need to prepare for cycling on the road, but the training takes place off-road in a safe environment.
Bikeability Level 2 – An introduction to road cycling (for children aged 9-12 years).
This four-day course (4 x 2 hour sessions) is for children who can cycle well, but have little or no experience of road cycling. This course begins off-road and once the basic skills have been covered, the training will move on to quiet local roads where the children will work on their road positioning, basic manoeuvres and communication with other road users.
Family cycle skills course
If you want to gain confidence and learn the skills needed to cycle safely as a family, we also offer family cycle skills sessions.
Our qualified instructors will teach you how to cycle as a family group and how to cycle with children. They'll share vital techniques and skills with you using quiet routes and parks to ensure safety.
You can find out more information on the family cycle skills page.
