Kickstart Scheme - paid work placements

The Kickstart Scheme provides funding to employers to create new six-month job placements for young people who are currently on Universal Credit and at risk of long-term unemployment

Kickstart placements will enable young people to gain work experience and develop skills such as teamwork, communication and organisational skills.

To be eligible to apply you must be:

  • Aged 16 – 24
  • In receipt of Universal Credit
  • Be at risk of long-term unemployment
  • Have been referred to apply for the role by your Job Centre Plus Work Coach

What is a Kickstart placement?

Each job placement lasts six months, helping you to build confidence and experience in the workplace, while earning a salary. You will also receive additional employment support and training to help you progress during the placement and beyond. You will receive a reference and support to enable you to secure longer-term employment or an apprenticeship once the Kickstart role ends.

What job roles/vacancies are available?

The council has a range of Kickstart vacancies across various work areas, which will be advertised on the council’s website. Please visit our job vacancy page regularly to search for roles and apply online. You can also register for job alerts for these roles.

We are also working with a range of local employers who are offering Kickstart work placements across a range of sectors such as creative, hospitality and catering, IT and public services.

Please visit our Islington Working Portal to find out more and apply for these new roles.

How much will I get paid?

Islington Council will pay the London Living Wage, £10.85ph. The roles we have created with our local employers are also offering London Living Wage. Please note that not all employers who are taking part in the Kickstart Scheme offer a London Living Wage.

Better off calculation

If you are interested in applying for a Kickstart placement, we strongly advise you to contact the council’s Income Maximisation Team (iMax) to have a ‘better off calculation’ assessment. The team can advise you on how working can make you better off, help you with your benefits when you start work or have a change in circumstances, and look at how much help you may get with childcare costs.

To speak to an advisor, Freephone 0800 731 8081, call 020 7527 8600 (please leave your name and a contact number for the team to call you back) or email
