Housing Design Awards Winner 2010
The houses at Armour Close were the first new homes to be built by Islington Council for over twenty years. The backland site, which formerly housed derelict garages, was overlooked by large Victorian residential blocks, and maintaining the privacy of existing and new residents was a major challenge.
The design response to the site constraints was to propose a terrace of four courtyard houses whose principal windows faced into private courtyards. Large windows allowed light to penetrate into double height open plan living spaces. Pitched roofs reduced the physical impact of the new development, while also allowing light to enter deep into the buildings through a series of rooflights.
