Benefit fraud

The way in which benefit fraud is dealt with is changing. A Single Fraud Investigation Service (SFIS) is being introduced by the Government to investigate and prosecute Social Security welfare benefits (including Housing Benefit) and Tax Credit fraud across Local Authorities, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and the Department for Work & Pensions (DWP).

This means that, from 1 August 2015, Islington Council will no longer be responsible for investigating and prosecuting Housing Benefit fraud. The council's remaining Benefit Fraud Investigation Officers will transfer to SFIS from this date and will be located at DWP offices.
