Council Tax Benefit changes

Council Tax Support

In April 2013 the government abolished Council Tax Benefit and replaced it with a scheme called “Council Tax Support” that cut £2.9 million from the money currently paid to Islington residents as Council Tax Benefit.

The council now assesses claims the same way we did for Council Tax Benefit but then reduce this by 8.5% unless you are a pensioner. This means that everyone of working age who gets a council tax bill has something to pay.

If you are a pensioner and you do not have a partner of working age, you will not be affected by the change to Council Tax Support and your payments will be worked out in the same way under the new scheme as they were under the old scheme.

Visit the council tax benefits are changing section to find out more about the changes and how they affect you.
