Observation Assessment and Record Keeping in the Foundation Stage

Assessment is a frequent and ongoing process throughout the Early Years Foundation Stage. The principle strategy for assessing young children’s development and learning is observation. Based on the knowledge and understanding learned from observations, practitioners respond appropriately and plan for children’s next steps. A number of relevant downloads are available below.

Observation and Assessment

The Early Years Foundation Stage Team has produced downloadable guidelines and formats to support you in recording observations and making assessments of children across the seven areas of learning and development in the Early Years Foundation Stage.

The additional documents are available in RTF format. As you use them you may wish to adapt them to suit your particular purposes.

Guidance for headteachers, managers and practitioners is currently being rewritten (February 2014)
