The Islington Crematorium is a beautiful 1930’s Art Deco building set within the tranquil grounds of the Islington and St Pancras Cemetery. The Crematorium complex features a chapel, a public waiting area with a drinks machine and toilets, and a memorialroom where the Books of Remembrance are displayed. Floral areas are located to the side of the Crematorium for the display of flowers following the funeral. All facilities are fully accessible and comply with the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act. The whole complex is maintained to provide an air of calm and peace for those attending a funeral. The crematorium is a 20/30 minute walk (1 mile) from the main entrance in the High Road.
The crematorium chapel opened in 1937. Its Art Deco detailing and its distinctive glass dome gives it an attractive airy and warm ambiance. The chapel seats 74 on chairs with 30 standing. We have a state of the art music system with acoustically balanced loudspeakers which ensures excellent sound reproduction. This is complimented by a Content D4700 organ and an organist can be arranged on request to play it. The chapel is available for funeral services of all faiths and beliefs so there are no fixed religioussymbols. The chapel is equipped with systems to assist the hard of hearing.
For far flung families or those who are house bound or just cannot be physically present on the day of a service at our crematorium, we can now offer a streamed service via a computer which enables any family members to view the cremation service taking place.
Following easy to understand instructions you are given a user name and password enabling you to log on to the internet and watch the cremation service.
You can also obtain a visual dvd or audio cd of the service. Please call the office on 020 7527 8300 for further details.
We can arrange to play any piece of music so long as it’s been published worldwide. You need to supply us the title of the song and artist through your funeral director to provide us with a minimum of 24 hours’ notice. This service is included in the price of the cremation.
Following the funeral service the coffin is transferred through to the crematory, which houses modern cremators in which the cremationwill take place. The cremated remains are also known as ashes, and various options exist for their final resting place, such as scattering, burial in a grave, placing in a columbarium or taking home. Our staff or your funeral director will be able to advise you of your options, and it is recommended that you give careful consideration to your choice. Your options will be explained in a brochure sent out two weeks after the cremation has taken place.
Either side of the crematorium building are beautiful areas where cremated remains can be laid to rest. The Garden of Remembrance features formal rose beds which are a picture to behold when in full bloom. Beyond the Garden of Remembrance is The Spinney, an informal garden area featuring a range of trees and shrubs, which play host to a wide variety of birds and mammals. Cremated remains may be scattered in this peaceful communal area, which is kept free of memorials and markers so that it can be enjoyed by all visitors equally.
The book is located in the waiting room inside the crematorium. You can view this during the week from 09.00am - 3.30pm. We request that you are quiet whilst entering the crematorium as a funeral service may be taking place. However you can view the electronic book of remembrance outside the crematorium at weekends.
