Cycleway 50: Nag's Head to York Way

Transport for London (TfL) are currently building a new cycleway, named Cycleway 50, between Finsbury Park and Nag’s Head. As part of that scheme, we’re working with TfL to provide new facilities to help and encourage people to walk, cycle and wheel in the area between Nag’s Head and York Way, along Caledonian Road, Penn Road, and Hungerford Road. These changes will form part of the broader Cycleway 50 route, which will run between Finsbury Park and Camden. You can find out more about Cycleway 50 on TfL's website.

We want to make it easier and safer for people of all ages and backgrounds to walk, cycle, and wheel, and to make more space for greening.

We've been listening to you

People first had an opportunity to tell us what they thought about some early stage proposals in May and June 2023. You can view more details of the early stage engagement proposals in the Early stage engagement section. We also received comments sent in via email to the project team at: cycleway50@islington.gov.uk.

We used this feedback to help develop and amend the designs we presented for public consultation in September and October 2023, available to view in details of our proposals. Importantly, whilst we still proposed improved walking and cycling crossings on Caledonian Road and Hillmarton Road, we no longer proposed changes to vehicular access arrangements from Hillmarton Road to Hungerford Road, or from Penn Road to Caledonian Road.

During the public consultation, 68% of respondents said that the changes would encourage them to walk, wheel, or scoot in the area (21% disagreed), and 68% also said they’d be more likely to cycle in the area (23% disagreed).

Next steps

On 12 February 2024 we announced that the council is now moving forward with the following improvements:

  • Creating a new pedestrian and cycle crossing on Caledonian Road, near Penn Road, with new greening and cycle parking near Penn Stores.
  • Creating a new pedestrian and cycle crossing on Hillmarton Road, at Hungerford Road, with traffic calming, new greening, and more cycle parking near St Luke’s Church.
  • Improving the crossings on Penn Road, near the gate to Penn Road Gardens, and on Hungerford Road near Middleton Grove. At both crossings, the council will increase the pavement space and deliver more greening.
  • Enabling two-way cycling on one-way streets, on Caledonian Road as cycle lanes separated from traffic, and on Penn Road as cycle symbol markings along the road.

Work on making changes to the area began in late February and are now expected to be substantially complete in June 2024. Those affected by the works will receive information with further details of any changes to traffic operation during the works.
