Assembly Hall

The ground level of the Assembly Hall

Islington Assembly Hall is a stunning venue in the heart of the borough on bustling Upper Street. As well as holding music concerts, fairs and other public events, the impressive space is available to hire for a range of corporate, private and community events.

The grade II listed building first opened in 1930 and was extensively refurbished in 2010 by Islington Council. Today, it retains much of its art deco interior and original architectural detail, including its magnificent stage. Modern enhancements include a high-spec PA system with a range of audio-visual equipment.

The main hall holds up to 600 people standing for a concert or up to 230 in a theatre-style layout for seated concerts, conferences and civil ceremonies. The tiered balcony seats a further 200 guests and is used at the majority of concerts held at our impressive venue.

The venue is located next door to Islington Town Hall and is easily accessible by public transport. It is a short walk from Highbury and Islington, Angel and Essex Road stations, and is served by the 4, 19, 30 and 43 bus routes.

For full details about the venue, including upcoming events, visit the Islington Assembly Hall website. To hear about events first, follow the venue on Twitter and Facebook.

Free community hire scheme

For the last few years, the council has run a scheme that offers Islington-based community organisations and charities the chance to apply for free hire of the hall for an event for a five-hour period on selected available dates. In the scheme, applicants must meet certain criteria to be eligible to be shortlisted. A panel will then select ten successful organisations, based on their applications.

The next scheme is likely to open for applications in early-December 2015. If you are an Islington-based charity or community organisation and would like to be notified when more information is available, please email us at

For more information about this year's scheme, which has now closed, please click here to read the criteria and guidance notes.
