Air Quality Action Plan

Following a period of consultation Islington's Air Quality Action Plan was published in August.  A number of comments were received from members of the public, local businesses and other organizations.  The actions contained in the plan were generally well received.
The Air Quality Action Plan was written because the council has predicted that the air quality in the borough will fail to meet some of the Government's target levels in 2004 and 2005.  The Further Assessment of Air Quality in Islington, a technical document to accompany the Air Quality Action Plan,  states that the annual mean objective for nitrogen dioxide will be exceeded over the whole of Islington.  Concentrations of nitrogen dioxide are predicted to exceed 29ppb along the busiest roads, compared to the target level of 21ppb in 2005.  Concentrations of airborne particulates are also predicted to exceed the 24 hour target levels at the busiest road junctions.
The implementation of the Air Quality Action Plan will depend on the council working in partnership with the Greater London Authority, other London boroughs and  organizations.  The success of the action plan will depend on the support of the borough's residents,  businesses and visitors.

The London City Car Club was launched in Islington on 17th September at the borough's first car club parking bays in Highbury Crescent.  Members of the club pay a monthly fee and a 'pay-as-you-drive' cost to drive car club vehicles.
