Water at home

Water at home

Lady in garden with watering can

Water is a precious resource and South East England has only a fifth of the average amount of water in England and Wales. Transporting and cleaning our water uses lots of energy so by reducing our use we can also reduce our carbon footprint.

Water use

  • The bathroom and toilet use nearly 40% of all water in the home
  • Of all water consumed in the home, about 15 - 20% is used washing clothes
  • The kitchen is a major consumer of water in the home, using around 10% of total household water consumption for cooking, cleaning, washing or drinking

Ways to save water

  • Try to use appliances only when they are full - half-load cycles use more than half the energy and water of a full load
  • Turn off the taps when you are brushing your teeth or shaving - can save five litres a minute
  • A quick shower can use much less water than a bath (but note high volume power showers can use more water than a bath in less than five minutes)
  • Instead of letting the tap run put the plug in the kitchen sink to rinse vegetables etc…
  • You can collect rainwater in a water butt. Islington have arranged a discounted price for residents so call 0845 658 0055
  • Consider getting a water meter to really cut down the amount you are using. If you are very careful with your water use it should help
  • to reduce your water bills. Call your energy supplier to find out
