We all use energy. Everything we use, buy, wear and eat has needed energy to make it. Most of our energy comes from coal, oil, gas and nuclear power. We then turn this into electricity, heating and petrol which we use every day. Coal, oil, gas and nuclear will all run out one day. As it runs out, the more expensive it will be to get the fuels making our bills higher.
Coal, oil and gas are termed 'fossil fuels'. Burning them releases CO2 and other gases which pollute the air and contribute to climate change. Nuclear power leaves behind radioactive waste that takes thousands of years to make safe. To help solve these issues we must find ways to use less energy and obtain energy from other, 'clean' sources.
We can take advantage of renewable energy sources that cause no harm to the environment. Islington Council is committed to doing this for its own buildings and across the borough. Click on the left hand menu to find out what the council is doing. We can also try to improve the energy efficiency of buildings. More information on this is given in the Energy Efficiency page in the Green Buildings section of the website.
The Council also manages the 'Islington Climate Change Partnership' (ICCP). This is a collective of organisations across Islington who have all pledged to reduce their carbon emissions to help tackle climate change. For further information on the ICCP, please contact:
