This section contains important information about council tax for Islington residents.
You can pay your council tax online. For more information, click on Pay It on the right under Do It Online.

On 28 February, we set the council tax rates for April 2008 to March 2009. Once again, Islington residents have one of the lowest council tax bills in the capital. The rise of 2.5% is below the level of inflation.

Council tax helps finance over 600 services in the community. We have managed to keep council tax low by looking carefully at what we spend and making administrative savings. Our main priority is to make sure you get value for money for all the services we provide.

The council sets the council tax annually. It is paid by the residents of Islington to help finance the authority's many services, such as:
Council tax bills are issued prior to the start of the financial year, which runs from April to March. There is one bill for each home.
It is calculated as a daily rate multiplied by the number of days in the financial year, and can be paid in instalments. All domestic property is charged council tax. The amount is calculated by the valuation band the property falls into.
The revenues and benefits service is the council's service division responsible for billing and collecting council tax. It is part of the finance department. Queries regarding billing and collection should be made directly to the revenues and benefits service.

If you are on a low income you may be entitled to council tax benefit. This is shown on bills as a reduction to the amount payable and referred to as 'council tax rebate'.

If you have received a council tax bill that shows you have overpaid your council tax account, or you believe that a refund is due, you can apply for a refund.
Click on Housing and Council Tax Forms under Do It Online on the right. Then select Council Tax Refund Form from the list of forms.
To submit the refund form you will need to know your council tax account number. If you do not know your council tax account number, you can send a request for a refund to council.tax@islington.gov.uk quoting your name, address of the property your overpaid on with a contact telephone number and/or address.
