Islington Volunteer Review

The Institute of Volunteering was commissioned to review volunteering in Islington and has produced a report which will provide the basis for developing a volunteering strategy for the borough.

At just under 22.8%, the rate of people volunteering in Islington compares favourably with the London average of 20.8% and residents are involved with a wide range of organisations and activities.

The Review

In reviewing this activity, the Institute of Volunteering was asked to consider:

• the purposes of volunteering
• existing opportunities to volunteer
• how people are informed about them
• the support that they receive
• how volunteering links together
• how volunteering links with Islington's

Key Actions

The review recommended key actions to accompany the development of a volunteering strategy:

• clarification and development of roles of the local volunteering infrastructure
• identifing and resourcing a lead body for Islington
• removing barriers and supporting everyone who wants to volunteer
• increasing the understanding and championing of volunteering
• promoting and publicising volunteering

Consultation

In carrying out its research the Institute of Volunteering held a number of meetings, interviews and sought wider views and opions through an online survey.
