Disabled Volunteers

Disabled Volunteers

Disability shouldn't be a barrier to volunteering and all of the resources mentioned in this section of our website can help you to become a volunteer.

It is of course up to you whether or not you want to disclose your disability but you should find that most voluntary organisations will want to find ways to support you to carry out your volunteering role more confidently and safely.

Additional Support

There is also additional help available to help you to volunteer in Islington:

Voluntary Action Islington: The borough's main volunteering centre supports disabled people into volunteering and helps voluntary groups and organisations take on disabled volunteers.

Disability Action in Islington: If you're interested in volunteering with a disability organisation Disability Action in Islington take on volunteers.

They also advise on a range of disability issues and can put you in touch with other disability organisations or groups working with disabled people.

Welfare Benefits

You can still volunteer and continue to claim benefits such as:

  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Severe Disablement Allowance
  • Incapacity Benefit
  • Housing Benefit
  • Job Seeker's Allowance (JSA)
  • Employment Support Allowance

However, you need to be aware of certain restrictions which are explained in the Volunteering While Receiving Benefits leaflet which you can download from the bottom of this page.
