Islington Council

A Carer is a term used to describe someone who, without payment, looks after a family member, partner or friend, because of their illness or disability.

Approximately 6 million people in the UK help to look after others who need some extra help in everyday life. Carers can have a whole host of responsibilities - from doing the weekly shopping, to cooking and cleaning, to helping someone in and out of the shower.

Islington Council's social services department have a number of specific teams trained to deal with different areas of care:

    Children

    • Disabled Children's Team aims to provide a quality, child-centred service for disabled children and young people (and their families or carers) who live in Islington.
    • Disabled Children's Outreach Team works with parents/carers of children and young people with disabilities to increase awareness and improve general parenting skills or techniques.

    Adults

    • Home Care provides personal home care to support people so that they can remain in their homes. People are asked to pay something towards the cost of the service (depending on the amount of money they have to live on.)
    • Occupational Therapy is a service offered to people when, as a result of permanent and substantial disability, they are having difficulty carrying out everyday tasks by themselves.
    • Whittington Hospital Community Team helps adults with physical or sensory disabilities at Whittington Hospital, based in Archway.
    • The Manor Gardens Centre near Holloway Road, runs a homecare service and a volunteer project providing a befriending service for isolated and housebound people in the neighbourhood. There is also a project to help those recovering from a stroke or heart disease.
