Islington is proud of its diversity and the council will challenge discrimination in all its forms. 'Dignity for all' should be the experience of Islington staff, residents and service users, regardless of age, gender, disability, faith, race, sexuality, nationality, income or health status.

Islington Council promotes the values of dignity and diversity across the organisation, amongst its partner agencies and across the community. The council will promote community cohesion and equality for all groups but will especially target discrimination based on age, disability, gender, race, religion and sexuality.

The issues facing these groups appear later on in this section and in greater detail within the EDU webpages. Islington Council's approach is set out in detail in corporate and departmental equality action plans.

In general, Islington will do the following:

  • Promote community cohesion by promoting shared community values and understanding, underpinned by equality, respect and dignity for all.

  • Promote the welfare of its employees by keeping the workplace free from harassment, bullying or other forms of discrimination.

  • Improve the quality of life of residents by promoting safer, inclusive communities.

  • Promote active citizenship within excluded groups.
