Islington Council opted into the Sustainable Communities Act, which has enabled us to work with the community to put forward ideas to government about how to improve the economic, social or environmental well being of the borough.
We asked for ideas from residents and community groups and got a very good response. Residents and voluntary groups generated over a hundred suggestions and a panel of Islington residents helped to shortlist twelve ideas, which were all agreed by the council at the end of July.
Ideas include changes in the law to protect and promote local shops and facilities and the protection of biodiversity on railway land. All twelve of the final submissions can be accessed by clicking on the links at the bottom of the page.
The Government appointed the Local Government Association (LGA) to consider some 300 proposals from across the country and make recommendations. Islington was very pleased to hear that then of our twelve proposals were recommended by the LGA to go forwad to government at the start of this year. We expect to hear later this year which, if any of our proposals will be taken forward and turned into legislation by government.
