Public Space Improvement

Public Space Improvement

We have started to make improvements to areas that have excessive street clutter or are difficult or dangerous for pedestrians.

In addition, we will be improving links between public transport and services, and improving lighting and street furniture.

Projects include:

Archway

Several environmental improvements have taken place in Archway, including:

  • repaving Junction Road outside Archway Underground Station

  • reduction of street clutter

  • introduction of new trees

  • new street traders kiosks and street benches

  • a Wayfinding board

Other improvements will include:

  • planting of 100 trees in the Archway area

  • improvements to Archway Park

  • a new planting scheme at the Archway triangle on Holloway Road

Nags Head

We are currently working with Transport for London (TfL) to make the Nags Head into a safer and more attractive town centre for pedestrians after dark by designating pedestrian lighting to light the pavements along Holloway Road in the Nags Head town centre.

Highbury Place

Highbury Place, between Highbury Fields and Highbury Corner, is the A1 demonstration project for a ‘shared surface’ public space – which is an area in which both the footpath and the roadway are at the same level. Improvements include:

  • removal of railings and street clutter

  • planting trees to make a green link between Highbury Fields and the Highbury Corner arboretum

  • introduction of a cycle lane in the opposite direction to the flow of traffic in order to provide a cycle link from Highbury Corner to Highbury Fields

  • repaving the area using high quality materials

Most importantly, the carriageway, cycle lane and pavement at Highbury Place are all level, providing a shared surface, which slows traffic down and gives equal priority to pedestrians, cyclists and motor traffic.

Islington Green

Changes have been made to Islington Green to make it more pedestrian and cycle friendly. Please click on the links on the right hand side of the page for more information.
