A1 Borough Project

A1 Borough Project

Improving the A1 road in Islington and the area around it is one of the council’s priorities. The A1 is the backbone of Islington, comprising Holloway Road, Upper Street and Goswell Road.

The A1 is a busy and congested traffic artery – it is also the largest public space in the borough. For many of us, the street is part of our daily lives. It is where we go to shop, work, learn, do business and relax. In many places, the quality of the local environment is very poor and work is already in hand to make it safer, cleaner and greener.

We want to improve the A1 corridor – making it a place that brings local communities together rather than dividing them. We want to do this in the following ways.

  • Improving local environments – clean, green, safe initiatives to improve the pedestrian environment along the A1.

  • Public space improvements - joining up both sides of the road, improving quality of pavements, reducing clutter and improving access to existing facilities and public spaces.

  • Creating a strategy for long-term improvements to key areas that are negatively impacting on local residents.

The A1 Borough project has been running for three years and has already made great progress in improving the street environment. We are now starting to tackle some of the public space improvements as well as working with our key partners to plan long-term redevelopment.
