Apprenticeships

The current round of recruitment for the Islington Apprentice Scheme has ended but we will be recruiting again later in the year. Full details will be available from this section of the website.

Applications will be open to candidates who:

  • are 16 years old or over
  • are an Islington resident or a recent Islington school or care leaver
  • have the right to work in the UK
  • are not qualified to NVQ4 or degree level

About the Islington Apprentice Scheme

The scheme offers Islington residents aged 16 or over a contract of up to two years with the council to work as an apprentice. Successful candidates will also receive training one day a week at a local college which will lead to a nationally recognised qualification.

There are many benefits to the scheme including:

  • Work Experience - Paid work in a council department for up to two years, with a salary of between £15,036 and £18,732. You’ll learn all aspects of the job from professional staff. We offer a variety of types of job and you’ll get an in-depth understanding and first hand experience of how the council works. The valuable skills and experience which you’ll receive will equip you with what you need to move closer to a job with the council or another career if that's what you decide you want.
  • Training - We will pay your fees and give you day release to go to college and train for a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ). This will be relevant to the area of work that you've chosen and recognised by any employer – not just the council.
  • Support and Guidance - We’ll provide expert support to guide you through every stage of your journey. You may have difficulty with the job tasks, struggle with your college course or need help to sort out other things such as housing, debt or childcare.

Apprentice Profile – Kerry Wickens

Kerry Wickens

The Electoral Services team are responsible for the huge process of managing elections and encouraging residents to vote. Kerry Wickens has joined the team as an apprentice:

"I applied for the apprentice scheme because I wanted a career change. I had been in the same job for ten years so my experience was limited. I liked the idea of being able to work and study at the same time so the apprentice scheme was a perfect opportunity to do that."

Apprentice Profile – Jamie Jacobs

Jamie Jacobs

There are over 200 parks, squares and open spaces in Islington. Islington’s greenspace rangers look after these spaces and maintain the borough’s plants and trees for the public to enjoy. Jamie Jacobs has taken on an apprenticeship as a greenspace ranger.

“I’ve always wanted to work outdoors and had strong interest in gardening. I’m so glad I found out about this opportunity to work as an apprentice park ranger. My managers and the staff who run the scheme are all really supportive. It’s been great getting to know the other apprentices and sharing experiences with other people who are all just starting out in their new jobs too.”

Future Recruitment

The next round of recruitment will be advertised later in the year on this page.
