Special Treatment Licensing

The council has adopted provisions contained in Part II of the London Local Authorities Act 1991 and Part IV of the London Local Authorities Act 2000 , relating to the licensing and control of any establishment for special treatment.

Who needs a Special Treatment Licence?

An establishment will require a Special Treatment Licence if the premises are used for:

  • massage
  • manicures
  • acupuncture
  • tattooing
  • cosmetic piercing
  • chiropody
  • as well as others

Registered Therapists

Any person practising a special treatment at a licensed premises also needs to individually register. The Explanatory Notes document, which can be downloaded from the bottom of this page, states who needs to apply and how to do so. Registration as a therapist in Islington is free of charge.
