A social or community enterprise is a business which has social objectives. Instead of going to owners or shareholders profits are reinvested in the community.
In Islington voluntary organisations and community entrepreneurs have set up social enterprises to deliver local services and offer an alternative to dependency on public sector funding or a purely profit driven approach.
Successful social enterprises include Coin Street Community Builders on the South Bank, Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen restaurant off City Road and HCT which operates red bus routes in the borough.
They can also offer fresh approaches to tackling poverty and social problems in an area.
