This section contains information about organisations that can offer free legal advice to Islington residents. It also contains links to other useful organisations.

Islington Law Centre

Islington Law Centre provides free legal advice and assistance to people who live, work or study in the borough. The Law Centre has a specific commitment to people on a low income, and to assist with those areas of law where no free Legal Help is available.

The Mary Ward Legal Centre provides similar services and is based at 26-27 Boswell Street, WC1N 3JZ. Contact the centre on 020 7831 7079.

Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB)

Islington Citizens Advice provides free, confidential and independent advice to residents to resolve their debt, benefits, housing, legal, discrimination, employment, immigration, consumer and other problems.

Access to the service is by phone only on 0844 856 3537 Monday - Friday (10am to 5pm). Calls cost five pence a minute, although you can ask to be called back if you can't afford the call.

An appointment may be offered to meet face to face if your enquiry can't be dealt with by phone.

Islington People's Rights (IPR)

IPR provide specialist advice and tribunal representation for residents on debt and welfare benefits. Service is offered at their office and various outreach venues in Islington. Full details of services and venues are on the IPR website.

Free, independent, confidential legal advice for anyone who lives or works in the Essex Road area. Drop into or contact one of the four venues below:

South Islington Advice Project

The South Islington Advice Project (funded by Cripplegate Foundation) has outreach sessions for benefits, housing, council tax and debts at various centres:

Community Legal Service Direct

Community Legal Service Direct is an easy to use service that can help you deal with your legal problems. It provides free, confidential and independent information, help and advice on a range of common issues.

Mediation

Mediation involves an independent third person helping parties in dispute to reach a resolution. The mediator does not make decisions or impose a settlement. They encourage and facilitate a settlement that is decided by and acceptable to the parties themselves.
