Islington Drug and Alcohol Action Team

The drug and alcohol action team merged its overarching partnership board with the Crime Reduction Partnership and the Youth Offending Team Board to form the Safer Islington Partnership.

The Safer Islington Partnership brings together different organisations including Islington Council, Primary Care Trust (PCT), Police, Fire Brigade, Probation, and the voluntary and community sectors, to deliver initiatives aimed at reducing harm caused by drugs and alcohol to both communities and individuals in the borough.

The Islington Drug and Alcohol Action Team (IDAAT) are the group of officers who help the Safer Islington Partnership develop plans that address the key areas of the National Drug Strategy. They ensure that all drugs-related initiatives in Islington are adhering to a cohesive overall strategy and that the relevant partners are aware of each other’s work programmes and forging the correct links.

The plans look at a range of areas:

• how Islington reduces the availability of drugs on streets and in our estates

• how Islington works with different community groups, tenants’ residents associations, the police’s safer neighbourhood teams and others to reduce the negative impact of drugs and alcohol on our communities

• how Islington helps young people avoid becoming the next generation of problematic drug and alcohol users

• how Islington gets the right mix of drug and alcohol services, providing effective and high quality treatment for all young and adult users who need them

• how Islington helps drug using offenders to access drug treatment services
