Islington council is responsible for the administration of the council pension fund under the local government pension scheme (LGPS) Regulations 1997. These regulations detail the procedures for the management of your pension. There are in excess of 5000 active members within the Islington pension fund. New employees of the council and existing employees who have not already joined, are entitled to join the scheme which is a final salary defined benefit scheme.
From 1st April 2008 all current LGPS members will move into a new look scheme. The new scheme is designed to ensure that the LGPS continues to be viable and that it remains fair and affordable for everyone. The council maintains a pension fund to finance the scheme benefits built up by scheme members, and is required by the LGPS regulations to publish statements setting out its policies on investment of the fund assets and also on its strategy for achieving full funding.
