ALERT 3: Rogue tree surgeons - January 2014

Beware of Rogue Tree Surgeons operating in Islington

On 9 January 2014 Trading Standards were alerted to a rogue tree surgeon who was touting for business in the Penn Road area. The business was called ‘London Tree Care’.

We received a simliar report in August 2013 when a resident noted that there was no trading address stated on the business's leaflet and the website they advertised did not exist. This means if you did instruct them to do work, and there was a problem with the standard of the work, you might have no way of finding the trader again.

Conservation areas

Parts of Islington are designated conservation areas, this doesn’t bother the scammers and yesterday they were misleading residents by claiming they could start work immediately. Residents who believed them could find that they have inadvertently broken the law themselves.

We strongly advise not to do business with this company. We would also urge residents to be mindful of any neighbours who may be intimidated into getting work done.

Islington Council's Tree Service

Islington Council's Tree Service offer the following advice:

  • Trees take a lifetime to grow but only minutes to destroy, don't let illegal tree works ruin your home – and put you at risk of a criminal conviction.
  • Professional tree surgeons will not turn up unrequested, or pressure you to get work done - always check the legal status of your tree with us.
  • You shouldn't be pressured into getting your tree pruned - always check with the council first.

Islington's Tree Preservation Officers can be contacted on 020 7527 2150.  More information on the Tree Service can be found on this link Protected Trees.
