London Overground update
Islington residents will benefit from planned improvements to services along the East London Line and London Overground network.
Works are underway to extend the East London Line to Highbury and Islington station. Additional funding has been committed by Transport for London and Department for Transport to extend this line to Clapham Junction, which will create an orbital rail link around London.
Works to London Overground train lines
Works to improve the London Overground network across London have started this month. In Islington:
Works on the Richmond to Stratford line between Camden Road and Dalston Kingsland stations will begin on 19 April 2009 for an 18 month period. During this period, the line will be closed on Sundays. Between Christmas 2009 and Easter 2010, rail services will be suspended completely between Camden Road and Stratford.
To carry out works on the Gospel Oak to Barking line, weekend closures of the line are taking place until autumn 2009.
Bus replacement services will be provided when the train lines are closed. Details of this can be found on Transport for London’s website, link on the right hand side of the page.
Works to London Overground stations
Works to improve the stations are also proposed to be carried out from April 2009.

Major road works in Dalston impact Islington buses
In a change to previously advertised dates, the closure of Dalston Lane has been delayed until February 2009.
From February for about two months, Dalston Lane will be closed to all traffic westbound only between Queensbridge Road and Kingsland High Street. This is to allow the construction of the East London line extension to Highbury and Islington station. Delays are expected.
Bus routes 30, 38, 56, 242, 277 and N38 will be diverted along Queensbridge, Richmond and Kingsland Road when travelling westbound towards Islington. Buses travelling from Islington in the direction of Hackney will be unaffected.
Please click the following link for a map showing temporary bus routes. It is also recommended cyclists use the map to identify alternative cycle routes.
Car users should seek alternative routes where possible.
Network Rail improvements to Farringdon Station
Work has begun on an exciting programme of improvements which will revitalise Farringdon Station. The project is part of Network Rail’s wider £5.5 billion upgrade to the Bedford to Brighton Thameslink line.
Network Rail will be extending platform lengths and concourse facilities at Farringdon Station, to increase the capacity both on the trains and in the station itself. When complete by 2012 the station will be served by twice as many through trains per hour.
There will be some disruption affecting the station and surrounding streets. Affected residents will receive a fortnightly update from Network Rail outlining disruptions.
Network Rail is managing the delivery of these improvement works.
If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact the Network Rail National Helpline on 08457 11 41 41.
