Safer Travel at Night

Safer Travel at Night

Islington is a lively borough, day or night, and people are moving about regardless of the hour. Travel at night, however, is very different than during the day. This means there is a need to make travel at night safer and more convenient.

Islington Council is committed to making the borough safer at night. The council is meeting this commitment by undertaking activities such as enhancing street lighting, creating people-friendly streets, developing safer routes to public transport, improving bus services and taxi ranks/access points, and improving minicab safety.

When You are Out at Night

The council aims to make the environment for travelling at night as safe and convenient as possible. Locations that have a particular role in promoting safer travel at night, such as pubs and clubs, often provide clear, comprehensive and up-to-date information about the availability of public transport and taxi/minicab services in the area. In fact, some locations have even set up their own private hire firms to serve their customers.

So when you are out at night, speak with employees of the pub, club or wherever you may be to find out the best way to safely get where you need to go.

Cabwise

Another information source for safer travel at night is Cabwise. Provided by Transport for London, Cabwise is a service that uses text messaging to relay contact information to you about licensed minicab services available to you locally. Simply text CAB to 60835, and two minicab numbers and one taxi (black cab) number will be sent straight back to your mobile phone. You don’t even need say where you are as your location will be found using GPS.

Booking your minicab guarantees that your trip will be carried out by a licensed driver, in a licensed vehicle. It also means that a record is kept of your journey, your driver and the vehicle used so, in the event of any problems, the driver can be traced.

Only taxis (black cabs) can be stopped by customers and can pick up off the street. Minicabs cannot accept fares without being booked in a minicab office or over the phone first. Even minicabs lined up outside pubs and clubs are breaking the law if they accept your fare without a booking being made first. You must not approach minicab drivers and any minicab driver that approaches you on the street anywhere is acting illegally. Do not get in.
