ScootAbility Camden and Islington

The ScootAbility service is an award wining service that offers the short-term loan of Personal Mobility Vehicles (PMVs) such as scooters and power chairs to residents (aged 16+) of Camden and Islington who have mobility impairments. ScootAbility recently won the London Transport Award Winner for Project Innovation 2007 and in 2006 won the National Transport Award for Project Innovation.
The vehicles are available to loan for up to seven days at a time. ScootAbility provides full training and minor home adaptations as part of the service. Unlike other scooter loan schemes, ScootAbility delivers and collects the vehicles from the homes of service users.

The ScootAbility service is provided via a partnership with the London Boroughs of Camden, London Borough of Islington and Transport for London.

The scheme aims to improve the quality of life of older and disabled people through mobility, providing an innovative approach to increasing independence and reducing social exclusion.

Eligibility

The scheme is for permanent residents of Camden and Islington who are aged 16 years and over and who have mobility impairment or are housebound due to a disability. Applicants will need to provide proof of age and of permanent residence in the London Boroughs of Camden or Islington.

How to Join ScootAbility

You can download an application form at the bottom of the page.
Once a ScootAbility application form has been received, every applicant is provided with full training with a on a choice of different PMVs, to ensure that the applicant is provided with the most suitable vehicle for his/her needs.

Training

The application process includes full training and home assessment.
All applicants are provided with 1-to-1 training to ensure that they feel confident and safe using a vehicle. Professional trainers take the time to ensure that applicants are confident in the use of the scooter and its functions. The trainers will always be happy to answer any questions.

The home assessment involves assessing an applicant’s home to ensure that it has adequate access, a safe storage space and recharging facilities for the PMV. This is important to ensure that the vehicle is safely stored.
Once training has been successfully completed, you will be awarded membership. There are different levels of membership:

Membership Levels Membership Description

SC1:    Day loan only Your property has a secure storage area,
             but no safe charging facilities

SC2:   One to seven days loan Your property is suitable for PMV
use. Secure storage area  and charging facilities were identified.

Home Assessment

The application process includes a home assessment which involves checking your home to ensure that it has adequate access, storage space and somewhere to recharge the vehicle. This is important because we need to ensure that the vehicle will not be stolen or vandalised.

Minor Home Adaptations

The ScootAbility service provides minor home adaptations e.g. installation of ramps, portable garages and indoor/outdoor power points where necessary.

How to Use the Service

Once membership has been approved a ScootAbility Welcome pack will be dispatched. The pack provides more details of the ScootAbility scheme and useful contact numbers.

Cost to User

Using the scheme is currently free. There are no hidden costs and no further charges when a member loans a PMV.
