Change to Blue Badge Service

The Department for Transport has instigated a number of changes to the Blue Badge scheme, aimed at tackling badge fraud and misuse, and improving the process of independent medical assessments.

Badges have been redesigned to aid enforcement and make them harder to tamper with, copy or forge. The new badges are issued by a central security company, and not the council. You can also apply for a badge online via Directgov.

New way to pay for parking

We are now trialling a new way to pay for short stay parking in the south of the borough. The trial is in parking zones A and C and allows drivers to pay for parking via PayPoint at shops across the area. This is part of our aim to increase the number of ways customers can access and use our services.

Drivers can still pay at machines that take coins or cards, or by Pay-by-Phone as well as the new service. A display on the pay and display machine shows where to find the nearest PayPoint shop. These maps of zone A and zone C also show where participating PayPoint outlets are located.

Motorcycles in Islington bus lanes

Transport for London are currently conducting a trial to let motorcycles, mopeds, scooters and tricycles - but not those with sidecars - travel in most red route bus lanes in London.

This means that the above vehicles will be allowed to travel along all Red Route bus lanes in Islington without receiving a penalty charge.

However, non-Red Route bus lanes are not included in the trial and therefore the rules in Islington bus lanes that are not on Red Routes will remain unchanged. Non-Red Route bus lanes can be found in streets such as Essex Road, Caledonian Road, Old Street, Junction Road, St Paul's Road and Balls Pond Road.

To avoid getting a ticket please check the signs first to see if it’s okay to use any bus lane before entering it.

Parking in Turnmill Street, EC1

Some parking spaces in Turnmill Street have been removed until further notice. Parking spaces are still available at the junction of Clerkenwell Road turning into Turnmill Street, however these may be suspended at short notice. This is to facilitate Network Rail redevelopment work at Farringdon Station as part of the Thameslink upgrade programme. The development works will allow more capacity at the station as well as facilitate the new Crossrail services when they are launched.
