Local Safety Schemes

These schemes are designed to address accidents in a localised area.

Current programme of works

Caledonian Road Corridor Improvements (Roman Way to Camden Road)

The scheme focuses on lowering traffic speeds, preventing and reducing accidents in this area. It will also improve conditions for all road users - in particular, pedestrians and cyclists.

Proposals include:

• Installing a raised entry treatment with kerb buildouts at the junction of Caledonian Road with Stock Orchard Crescent (north and south arm);
• Installing a new zebra crossing outside No. 519 Caledonian Road;
• Installing an advisory cycle lane between Camden Road and No. 492 Caledonian Road; and
• Upgrading the existing crossing point in Biddestone Road at the junction with Caledonian Road.

The works for this scheme started in October 2010 and is anticipated to be completed by 31 March 2011.

BVPI 165 - Tactile Paving Maintenance/Amendments

Proposals include:

• Upgrading the tactile paving layout of four crossing points at the junction of Liverpool Road with Tolpuddle Street;
• Replacing the existing granite ramps with asphalt;
• Widening and changing the tactile paving layout; and
• Renewing road markings of the existing zebra crossing on Liverpool Road close to its junction with Chapel Market (outside ‘Gap’).

The works will start on 14 February 2011 and is expected to be completed by 7 March 2011, with the closure of Liverpool Road on 21 February 2011 for five days.

King Henry's Walk

Proposals include:

• the introduction of a zebra crossing on the existing raised table on King Henry's Walk; and
• the removal of pedestrian guard railing.

The works will take place on 21 to 25 February 2011. A plan of the works can be found below.
