Created by Islington Council's Road Safety and Special Projects Team, ScootAlive is a series of six workshops aimed at young people aged from 12 - 16 to raise awareness of scooter safety and deter them from taking part in scooter-related anti-social behaviour. Project partners include the Met Police ScooterSafe team, Islington Council Youth Services, Spark Plug scooter maintenance, Islington Drug Alcohol Action Team, local Safer Neighbourhoods police team and Islington Fire Brigade.
After a successful pilot at the Canonbury Project in April 2007, ScootAlive has now developed into a rolling programme. Each ScootAlive course has six workshops, which are delivered by project partners.
ScootAlive is designed as a prevention action programme, including young people who have not been engaged in criminal or anti-social behaviour, but who are deemed to be at risk of future criminal or anti-social behaviour through a combination of local environment and peer pressure.
The end of the course rewards them with a scrambling day at a local track, where they are supervised and given the opportunity to apply everything they have learned by experiencing scrambling in a safe environment while wearing appropriate clothing.
The Safer Neighbourhoods Police Team has already commented on the impact in the Canonbury ward since the pilot. ScootAlive is of course only one of a number of community safety initiatives taking place across Islington.
